**PBS SoCal to Premiere Documentary Film “UNIDAD: Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos” to Premiere on PBS SoCal on June 1, 2023**

 

Los Angeles, CA – 5.24.23 – PBS SoCal is pleased to announce the world premiere broadcast of “UNIDAD Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos,” a documentary film about the history of Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos (GLLU), a pioneering organization founded in Los Angeles in 1981. The film will premiere on Thursday, June 1st, at 8 PM on PBS SoCal.

 

“UNIDAD'' tells the story of GLLU’s founding and its early years, as the organization fought for LGBTQ+ rights and social justice in the face of discrimination and prejudice. The film features interviews with GLLU founders and members, as well as archival footage and photographs. The film is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of the LGBTQ+ movement, the history of Los Angeles, and the history of the Latine community. The film was made possible with support from the California Endowment, L.A. Care, AltaMed, and AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

Filmmakers: Director & Editor Gregorio Davila, is a writer and all-around visual artist. Much of his work revolves around people of color, mainly Latinos, who he believes are grossly under and misrepresented in the media. He has produced several award-winning films: “L.A.: A Queer History” “Pt. 1 Culture & Criminalization”, “Pt. 2 Protests & Parades”, “Nancy from Wast Side Clover”, and “Jeanne Cordova: Butches, Lies, and Feminism”.

Executive Producer Roland Palencia, MA, (he/him) is a Professor at Tseng College at California State University Northridge (CSUN) in the Diverse Community Development Leadership MA program.

Producer Mario J. Novoa is an educator and filmmaker, who recently produced three award-winning documentaries: “L.A.: A Queer History” (PBS), “Nelly Queen: The Life & Times of Jose Sarria”, and “UNIDAD: Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos” (PBS). Mario teaches film production at Civic Studios Chicago. Mario has held various education administrative positions at Los Angeles Film School, Columbia College Hollywood, and CalArts. Mario is developing future film projects featuring the Latine immigrant and LGBTQ experience in the U.S. for Film Bliss Studios.
